Dates: 4 & 5 December | Location: Barbican, London

APEngine recommends the 3rd Fashion in Film Festival: Birds of Paradise, taking place at the Barbican this December.

Exploring costume as a form of cinematic spectacle, these sumptuous and rarely screened European films of the silent era comprise a captivating conclusion to the Barbican’s Autumn/Winter silent series. This programme highlights the hypnotising allure of film costume, as worn by the diva, the showgirl and the dancing fairies and spectres of the silent era. With live musical accompaniment from Lilly Henley, Jane Gardner, Stephen Horne and John Sweeney.

The Bridegroom Stripped Bare offers a delightful and rare glimpse of Alexander McQueen performing a design metamorphosis. The bridegroom is transfigured into the bride in a whirlwind of gaffer tape, glitter and gloss paint. The finale piece to a series of transformations that happened at SHOWStudio in July 2002, the performance was originally broadcast live via webcam. I saw this film only a few months ago at SHOWstudio’s Fashion Revolution exhibition at Somerset House, and as one of the introductory pieces to the show, found it utterly mesmerising and astonishing.

To the memory of Alexander McQueen.
