It’s always a treat to find underground film in unexpected places. Like the Westway underpass for instance…

Portobello Pop Up Cinema is a newly established, non profit Microplex (as opposed to Multiplex) cinema and arts venue situated in the Westway underpass on the Portobello Road / Acklam Road junction – an area steeped in a long and iconic history of creative subculture. Admission to the cinema is on a pay-what-you-can-afford basis, with a suggested donation of £4.

The first screening will be the Director’s Cut of Dolphins, directed by Mark Jay who will be introducing the screening, on Wednesday 14 July, 7.30pm. Dolphins is a love story set amidst the reckless worlds of Brighton’s Boy Racers. An urban fairytale for the ‘too fast to live generation’. Soundtrack by Fatboy Slim’s Skint Records, Hip Hop legend Roots Manuva (who plays a cameo).

The Portobello Pop Up Cinema welcomes ideas for screenings from artists, filmmakers, N.G.O’s and voluntary groups. Check out their website for the full July programme.
